Composition & Color of the Emerald

Emerald (Al2Be3[Si6O18] ) has been known for many thousand years also known as Green beryl. Emerald is the grass-green variant of beryl. Pure beryl is colorless, but if some of the aluminum atoms in the crystal are replaced by chromium and/or vanadium atoms, a green color is imparted to the crystals, known as emerald. Chromium atoms alone or when chromium predominates over vanadium a deep vivid green color is produced, as in the case of the Gachala Emerald. The color of the crystal is a pure deep green, and the crystal appears to be opaque. We will not be able to comment about the clearness and radiance of the stone since it is uncut. But, it is well known that most of the Gachala emeralds have good transparency and shine with increased brilliance.

Current Location

Now in the United States, it was donated to the Smithsonian Institution by the famous New York jeweler, Harry Winston.

Angara & Emeralds

A high quality emerald can be worth more than a diamond, as they are extremely rare. Many lesser quality stones are available, but even these can be relatively expensive.
